Margaret P. Pond Smith

Margaret “Peggy” Mace Pinner Pond Smith, 85, of Spartanburg, S.C., died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2016, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born Aug. 30, 1931, in Suffolk, she was the daughter of the late Donald Colin and Anna Hall Pinner and widow of Samuel Barber Pond Jr., who died in 1998, and James Ayers Smith Sr., who died in 2013.

Having studied journalism and English at Greensboro College, Peggy had a distinguished career in writing, editing and public relations. She wrote for and edited various newspapers in Virginia and North Carolina and won more than 300 national, regional and state awards for writing, public relations, speech writing and marketing. Over the course of her career, she served as director of public affairs for Fairfax Hospital System, director of communications and marketing for HMO National Professional Association, and as the senior vice president of a Richmond-based marketing firm. She was also a former officer of both the NC Press Club and Virginia Press Women. She was a member of P.E.O. Chapter D, Joshua Hawkins-DAR and several book clubs.

A resident of Summit Hills in Spartanburg since 1998, Peggy enjoyed wonderful friends and many activities. She was involved with the Residence Council, Elder Education, the choir, a Bible study group, and was a past writer for the Summit Hills News. She previously was part of the Shepherd’s Center writing group, where she served on its board of directors. Peggy was also an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she was part of the 39’ers and a circle group. Her energy, generosity, leadership skills, desire to serve and love of family and friends truly were remarkable.

Survivors include her children, Dr. Samuel B. Pond III (Susan), of Cary, N.C., and Lee MacRae Pond (Pamela), of Ellicott City, Md.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three stepchildren, James Ayers Smith Jr., Ruth Elizabeth Smith Fike (Robert) and Walter Andrew Smith (Rosalyn); and two step-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was predeceased by a daughter, Donna Pond Tracy (Kevin); and sister, Anna P. Cohn (Blair).

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6, 2017, at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 309 Fernwood Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29307, by the Rev. Dale Rawlings. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Spartanburg Humane Society, 150 Dexter Road, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
