Julia P. Pope, 95, went to be with the Lord on Jan. 1, 2017. She was the daughter of the late Irene and Willie J. Powell. She was predeceased by her husband, John Thomas “JT” Pope Sr., and a son, E. Lemuel Pope.

Julia was a Cub Scout den mother. She was also their little league baseball coach with Johnny and Stan on the team and Lennie as the batboy, and together they won the City Championship. Julia was an avid sports fan and loved her St. Louis Cardinals; she was also a member of Oxford United Methodist Church.

Julia is survived by her sons, John T. Pope Jr., and wife, Joyce, of Smithfield, and G. Stan Pope and wife, Charlene, of Waverly; grandchildren, Michelle P. Lawrence, Tommy Pope, Andy Pope, Allison P. Cooper, Justin Pope, Grey Pope and Cord Pope; 12 great-grandchildren; and her brother, Russell L. Powell.

A graveside funeral service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2017, at 11 a.m. in Bethlehem Christian Church Cemetery at 1549 Holland Road, Suffolk, VA 23434 by the Rev. Paul E. Martin. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.
