Grand jury indicts 41

The grand jury on Monday handed down 89 indictments against 41 defendants.

Among those indicted was Buddy Dewayne Rison, who is charged with six counts of forging public records.

Police say Rison gave his cousin’s name when he was arrested in Suffolk on Sept. 7 last year. They had received a call about a suspicious person in a parking lot and “saw obvious signs of drug use and possession,” Maj. Gerald Brandsasse said last October.

Rison was able to give his cousin’s full name, address and date of birth. Police couldn’t see the driver’s license photo to compare it with the man standing in front of them, so they arrested him under his cousin’s name.

It wasn’t until family members became suspicious that the error was discovered. Brandsasse said last year they charged Rison with a count of forgery for every document he signed under his cousin’s name.

Also among those indicted is Morris Rashawn Newsome, who police say injured a Suffolk police officer while resisting arrest last May.

He was arrested on May 17 on suspicion of throwing rocks at passing cars, according to documents on file in Suffolk Circuit Court. When an officer attempted to place him in handcuffs, he allegedly grabbed the officer’s wrists and did not let go until another officer arrived to help subdue him.

The officer suffered minor bruising and abrasions to his wrists, according to the court documents.
