Warriors win three in a row

Nansemond River High School’s boys’ basketball team picked up its first conference win of the season Tuesday night at Menchville High School.
The Warriors won 60-47 in the Conference 10 matchup. The win makes for the Warriors’ third in a row and removes them from last place in the conference.
After the first quarter of play, the Warriors were down. In the second quarter, they outscored the Monarchs 9-11 and went into halftime with a 21-18 lead. V.J. Wilkins had a big third quarter for Nansemond River with 13 points, helping the Warriors build their lead. Nansemond River went into the fourth quarter up 38-29 and kept their foot on the gas, ultimately leading them to victory.
Wilkins led the team in scoring with 13 points. Dy’Quan McGhee added 12 points, while Josh Hale and Gerard Stringer added 10 points apiece. It was the first time this season Nansemond River had four players score in double figures. Defensively, Jeremiah Lewis led the way with five blocked shots.
“We are believing in what we are doing,” Warriors coach Ed Young said. “I tip my hat to the kids. We are not making as many mistakes as we would usually be making. When we play right, we look good.”
Nansemond River ended the regular season at Warwick High School on Thursday.
