Local youth teams need votes

Two local youth sports organizations are in the running to have field makeovers done by the Norfolk Tides.

Suffolk Youth Athletic Association and Western Branch Athletic Association are in a nine-way contest to garner likes on Facebook and potentially get a field makeover from the Norfolk-based Triple-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles.

“Our entire organization looks forward to this project each year,” Tides General Manager Joe Gregory said in a press release. “We’ve been able to extend a helping hand to many outstanding communities, and it’s a great feeling to know that we’ve made a difference in the baseball experience for so many children across Hampton Roads.”

This is the sixth consecutive year the Tides have done the program. Bennett’s Creek Little League has benefited in a previous year.

The contest asked for nominations with pictures and a description of why the field deserves help from the Tides.

The description for the SYAA field notes how hard friends, families and volunteers work to keep the current field at a playable level.

“The fields could use so much more as far as better bases, fences, bleaches and much more, including our concession stand, which needs a huge makeover,” the nomination states.

Western Branch Athletic Association has also placed its Shetland field in the running. The field provides a playing location for children in the 4- to 6-year-old age bracket.

“We feel that a field renovation would greatly enhance kids’ first impression and first playing experience in youth baseball while also providing a safer playing environment overall,” the nomination states.

The project will be made possible thanks to the Tides Youth Baseball Fund.

Voting will take place on the Norfolk Tides Facebook page. The Tides have posted each contestant on their Facebook page, and whichever photo has the most likes by 4 p.m. this Friday will be the winner.
