Dr. Seuss fun for kids

Suffolk libraries are inviting families to join a celebration for the author that showed children all the places they could go with reading books.
Suffolk Public Library will have a Seussation Celebration at its Morgan Memorial and North Suffolk locations on Saturday. Children ages 3-5 are invited for an hour of fun and games from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
The festivities are in honor of the late children’s author Theodor Seuss Geisel — pen name, Dr. Seuss — and his March 2 birthday.
“His books have been so instrumental in teaching the children to learn to read, so we’re going to celebrate him as much as possible,” Suffolk Public Library Youth and Family Services coordinator Shawna LoMonaco said.
Children will go fishing in the “one fish, two fish” game, and make breakfast in games of “green eggs and ham,” LoMonaco said. They will match the yolk colors of the pretend eggs they’ll flip.
Fox in Socks will have them put socks on their hands and stack foam blocks. There will also be the obligatory Cat in the Hat game, in which they toss bean bags into the hat.
LoMonaco said that approximately 100 children are expected to attend simultaneous celebrations at the two library locations. She wants them to have fun with the games, and enjoy snacks of popcorn and blue Jell-o filled with Swedish fish.
More than anything, she wants them to like Green Eggs and Ham, along with all the other Dr. Seuss classics.
“I think it will be beneficial to them to spark their interest in reading and a love for Dr. Seuss, and hopefully check out some Dr. Seuss books, take them home, and share them with their families,” LoManaco said.
