NRHS advisor wins award

Nansemond River High School’s DECA co-advisor and 37-year veteran DECA co-advisor S. Michele Duncan won the prestigious Outstanding Advisor Award.
Duncan taught at Suffolk High School for 10 years and has been at Nansemond River High School for 27 years. In order to receive the award, she had to complete a variety of activities that included local, district, state, international and professional activities.
Duncan participated in the Virginia DECA Day Activity and coordinated a DECA field trip. She increased the DECA chapter membership from the previous year, and the DECA chapter received two ribbons at the DECA State Conference for Star Chapter and Super Star Chapter.
Duncan provided a leadership role at the DECA District Leadership Conference and has served as District 21 DECA co-advisor for the past 10 years. Her students participated and won at the District Leadership Conference.
Duncan attended the DECA State Leadership Conference and had four teams and two individuals competing. Duncan served as a series director and ran two state events at the DECA State Leadership Conference.
She also joined the teacher organization VAME — Virginia Association of Marketing Educators.
Duncan attended the DECA International Career Development Conference in Nashville, Tenn., in 2016. Duncan is a mentor for a new DECA advisor at her school this year. She attended the Virginia Association Marketing Educators Conference in 2016. She has also served on a curriculum development team for the Virginia Department of Education Marketing Curriculum.
