One adult was displaced and is being assisted by the American Red Cross following a house fire on Clay Street early Monday evening.
Firefighters were called to the scene at 6:38 p.m. and arrived to find heavy flames on the second floor and extending into the attic, according to a city press release.
While crews were attacking the fire from inside, a smoke explosion in the attic forced them to retreat to the exterior and fight the fire from outside with their newest piece of equipment, Ladder 3.
The fire was finally brought under control at 8:19 p.m.
The occupant of the house was not at home at the time of the fire. Occupants of two neighboring structures were evacuated while firefighters worked to bring the flames under control.
The Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the fire.
