Warriors go into break confident

Nansemond River High School boys’ soccer team went into its spring break 5-2 and satisfied with where they stand.
Nansemond River played two games back to back this week. They played rival King’s Fork High School on Tuesday, which resulted in a 6-1 victory. The Warriors followed that game with a tough matchup against Grassfield High School on the road Wednesday evening. Even though the Warriors lost 1-0, they are optimistic about their future this season.
“I think we fared pretty well this week,” Warriors coach Dustin Tordoff said. “We were able to get out to an early lead against King’s Fork, which was crucial in a rivalry game. Grassfield is always a tough game and a good measuring stick. We lost, but we played very hard.”
In the Grassfield game, the Warriors had to make some adjustments due to their soccer field being larger. Grassfield is known as one of the better boys’ soccer teams in the area, so playing them on the road is a tough feat. However, the loss was only Nansemond River’s second of the year.
“Our defense has been outstanding they keep us in every game,” Tordoff said. “Offensively, we created some good scoring opportunities, but we couldn’t get them go.”
Another testament to the strength of the Warriors defense is they’ve allowed only five goals in seven games. After spring break, the Warriors come back to three games.
“We feel good where we are going into the break,” Tordoff said. “We have a couple of guys who are banged up, so it will be good to get them some rest. We have a good group of guys with some strong-willed minds.”
Nine different starters have scored for the Warriors so far this season. Tordoff has coached some good teams in the past but feels his team this year is setting itself up for a strong run in the second half of the season.
