Members of Nansemond River High School’s Team WAR have a way of making a name for themselves, even after they’ve moved on to other schools.

So it has been with Zakiya Rashid.

The 2015 NRHS graduate has made her mark at the University of Miami. They are currently ranked 19th in the NCAA outdoor track and field ranking.

Rashid had a personal best at the Pepsi Relays on March 31. She threw the discus 54.10 meters, earning her fifth place in the event. It was also the third best throw in the school’s history.

She had reached her previous personal best in the previous meet, and she placed third in the women’s discus at the Hurricane Collegiate Invitational. Her throw of 50.19 meters at that event ranks fourth in UM history.

Rashid is a sophomore, so there’s lots of time for improvement.

During the indoor season, she finished sixth at the ACC Championships by throwing 14.97 in the shot put, which is a personal best.

In her time at Nansemond River, she was a state champion at shot put and was an integral part of team WAR, which has been competing well throughout the state and nationally for the last few years.
