Former Nansemond-Suffolk Academy standout Harper Birdsong plans to transfer to The College of William & Mary in the upcoming school year.

Birdsong, a 2016 NSA graduate, will be transferring from George Washington University. She saw action in nine games during her freshman season.

In a statement, Lady Tribe coach Ed Swanson described how excited he is to be adding Birdsong to their program.

“Harper is a very dynamic scoring guard that fits our system well,” Swanson said. “She was highly sought after by everyone, including us, when she was going through the recruiting process the first time, and we are happy to have her come to the Tribe this time. Harper will be a great scorer for us and will help us fill some of the scoring void we lose.”

At George Washington, her best game came on Feb. 8 against Rhode Island. She had nine points.

Last season, William & Mary’s women’s basketball team finished with a record of 20-11.

During her career at NSA, she was a three-time Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Player of the Year. Birdsong also was a two-time Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools Player of the Year. She helped lead NSA to its first state championship game. She scored 2,305 career points.

Because of NCAA rules, Birdsong will have to sit out the 2017-2018 season. However, she will be eligible to play for the 2018-2019 season.
