Lady Cavs ready to make them count

Lakeland High School’s softball team is ready to keep pace in conference play following a strong Southeastern District schedule.
Lady Cavs coach James Roddy sees his team wanting to get better. He is excited about seeing his team in action against some of the other 3A schools in the team’s conference. The Lady Cavs are ready to make the conference games count.
“We have been starting to play more together as a team,” Roddy said. “There are a few things we need to clean up.”
During spring break, Lakeland participated in a tournament at Grassfield High School. They went 1-1, and their loss came by one run against the highly regarded Grassfield team. It had seemed the Lady Cavs had been building some confidence until last week, when they faced off against fellow Suffolk school Nansemond River and allowed the Lady Warriors a strong victory.
Roddy says he feels his team is ready to turn the corner, but sometimes they take a couple of steps back. However, Roddy doesn’t believe the Lady Cavs have any major issues. He feels as if they can fix the little things that they can make a serious run in the postseason and in the conference.
“I’m ready to see how we look going up against these 3A teams,” Roddy said. “I expect us to continue to hustle and give effort and have a great attitude when we head into these games. The game is mostly mental and long as you’re focused you can do good things.”
The Lady Cavs will start their conference play on the road against Phoebus High School May 2 at 4:30 p.m.
