Off-road day planned

The weather forecast for Saturday looks a little muddy, and the folks planning to participate in Starr Motors’ annual Off-Road Day couldn’t be happier.

“Rain or shine, we are committed to the event,” said Joe Bonney, service manager at Starr Motors. “Rain makes mud.”

This is the 10th year the dealership has held the fundraiser to benefit the Relay for Life of Suffolk, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. It’s especially meaningful to the staff at Starr Motors this year.

Mechanic Rob Grubbs passed away from cancer last year, and there will be a special tribute to him during the day, Bonney said.

“The tribute to Rob and the fact it’s our 10th anniversary makes it kind of special,” Bonney said.

There are a couple of new obstacles on the off-road course set up behind the Pruden Boulevard dealership this year, Bonney said. The obstacles have been crafted from mud, dirt hills, logs and about 250 tons of rocks sponsored by Vulcan Materials.

“The course is set up for all makes and models,” Bonney said. “It has bypasses around certain obstacles if you don’t want to take your vehicle through it.”

For some obstacles, the driver is required to carry a winch to ensure they can free their vehicle if it doesn’t make it.

In addition to the off-roading, a truck and Jeep show will be on site. The cost is $15 to enter the show, $25 to enter the trail, or $30 for both. Credit cards will be accepted for the costs.

Spectators are free to attend, and food and drinks will be available for purchase. Vendors will be on site, and event T-shirts will be available for purchase. There is a prize raffle with thousands of dollars’ worth of donated gifts taking place about 2:30 p.m., and winners must be present.

“This is all to help raise money and awareness for Relay for Life,” Bonney said. “We raised $10,000 last year, and we hope to at least meet or exceed that this year. Starr Motors likes to give back to the community, so it’s just one of the many ways they give back.”

The entire event goes from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. this Saturday at the dealership, 2584 Pruden Blvd. Call 539-0214 for more information.
