Elsie Winslow Chatman

Elsie Winslow Chatman, 80, of 8301 Hudgins Circle, Suffolk, transitioned to her heavenly home on May 7, 2017, at Obici Memorial Hospital. She was a native of Nansemond County, born to the late Walter and Lizzie Hill Winslow. Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Lee Chatman; her aunt, Bertha Bland, who raised her from the age of 5 months; her sister, Maggie Chapman; and her granddaughter, Sheon J. Rose.
Elsie, known to be a hard worker, retired from the Smithfield Packing Company. She was a faithful member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Hobson, where she served on the Usher Board and was a member of the Pastor’s Aid Society and the Emma V. Kelly Hospitality Club. Elsie’s dedication to her family was evidenced by her actions and words.
She leaves to cherish her loving memories: three daughters, Jill Winslow (Don) and Venita Davis (Clinton), of Suffolk, and Gladys Mills (Samuel), of Elkridge, Md.; three grandchildren, Cherita Holland, Chmaika Mills and DeMars Taylor; eight great-grandchildren; loving nieces, Valerie Williams and Lynette Brown, and nephews, Robert and Richard Winslow, of Dallas, Texas, and Rodney Chatman, of Greensboro, N.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral service will be held at noon, Monday, May 15, 2017, at Macedonia Baptist Church, 8300 Crittenden Road, Suffolk, officiated by the Rev. Stanley Eley. Interment will be in Oakland Cemetery.
