To the editor:

Rex Alphin is pro-life, pro Second Amendment, his NRA rating is better than his opponent’s and he appreciates the agricultural lifestyle the 64th House of Delegates District is known for. That’s why I’m voting for him.

Rex believes in his community so much that he has owned and operated three businesses in his district.

His opponent said she has never raised taxes. How could she have? She’s never held any elected position to be faced with that hard reality.

Tax hikes have been a major thorn. Have we forgotten why taxes had to be raised? The Isle of Wight Board of Supervisors, on which Rex serves, unanimously voted to raise taxes because of the irresponsible misuse of taxpayer funds the previous board used to saddle Isle of Wight with huge amounts of unnecessary debt.

His opponent signed a Taxpayer Protection Pledge stating she won’t raise taxes. Maybe that’s unrealistic. I don’t want another broken promise. I want proactive leadership.

When you make tall promises, you always fall short. Rex is realistic, and words mean something to him. He knows you don’t have to be the loudest voice in the room to be effective.

As for fundraising, I would rather have a candidate who’s raised more money from his district than someone who’s raised their majority outside the 64th. Check out cfreports.sbe.virginia.gov. Candidates need to be accountable to their constituents, not outside political forces.

And what a shame political forces within local GOP groups think you are so ignorant that they banded together to tell everyone to vote for Rex’s opponent. That’s what the establishment and Democrats do.

Lastly, things have been said about all the “nice” letters for Rex. Honor, integrity, faith, commitment, and passion for family and community mean a great deal to Rex and it means something to me. Rex isn’t perfect, but he’s not a flash in the pan.
