A Nansemond River High School graduate was named to the Atlantic-10 Conference All-Rookie team.
Matt Holt, a freshman pitcher for La Salle University, is a 2016 Nansemond River graduate.
Holt has made an early impact for the Explorers. He finished the season with a 2-3 record and a 3.97 ERA. He made 14 appearances with 10 starts. During the season, he was twice a recipient of the A-10 Rookie of The Week award.
The La Salle freshman’s most impressive performance of the year came against the University of Delaware. He struck out eight batters in six scoreless innings, which eventually led the Explorers to the Liberty Bell tournament win.
The former Nansemond River standout is the sixth La Salle player in school history to be named to the All-Rookie team. Along with being on the A-10 All-Rookie team, Holt was also named Big 5 Rookie of The Year.
The Big 5 is a conference made up of all the NCAA Division I schools in the Philadelphia area. Holt becomes the first Explorer since the Big 5 began recognizing all-stars in 2006 to earn Rookie of the Year accolades. He was Big 5 pitcher of the week once.
Holt makes the second member off the 2016 Nansemond River 5A state baseball team to receive Rookie of The Year honors. Chowan University freshman Corey Fago was also named a top rookie in his conference.
