Myrtle Carrick Barlow Costner

Myrtle Carrick Barlow Costner, 94 passed away peacefully June 5, 2017, at the Robin Johnson House in Gastonia, N.C.

She was born in Isle of Wight County, Va., on Aug. 15, 1922, to the late Walter Claude and Susie Rebecca Moody Barlow. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Jasper Cleveland Costner.

Mrs. Costner was one of 14 children. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Gastonia. She retired from the Credit Union in Virginia. She also had been a member of First Baptist Church in Suffolk, where she was a member of senior citizens’ choir. Her biggest joys were her family and reading her Bible.

Survivors include her children, Jim Costner and wife Ann of Gastonia, Michael Costner and wife Frieda of Lake Mary, Fla., and Bruce Costner of Chester; grandchildren, Sandra Larson and husband Andy, Matthew and wife Kim, Jason and wife Tabitha, and Madison and Drew Costner; four great-grandchildren, Jonam, Sierra, Zachary and Collin; and a brother, Bobby Barlowe of Irvington.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:30 p.m., Thursday at the Withers and Whisenant Funeral Home. A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. June 8 at Burke Memorial Park, 2506 Burke Memorial Park Road, Morganton, N.C., with the Rev. Asher Panton and the Rev. Steven Fuller officiating.
