Nansemond River High School’s softball team hopes to have a different outcome this time around.
The Lady Warriors are gearing up for another run at a state championship with a semifinals game in Chantilly. The team advanced to the same game two years ago but fell short.
This time around, coach Gabe Rogers hopes things will be different. The first time around Rogers said he preached to his team that it was just another game. This year, he has changed his approach.
“I told the girls, ‘Look, this is the state tournament,’” he said. “We’ve had a strong week of preparation, and they are enjoying everything they have earned. We have to go get it.”
To be successful Nansemond River will have to impose its style of play on its opponents. Rogers wants his team to trust what got it there.
Nansemond River will face 5A North champion Atlee High School at 5:30 p.m. today at Westfield High School. Whichever team wins will play in the championship game at 1 p.m. Saturday.
