Firefighters spent most of Sunday afternoon fighting a mulch fire at John C. Holland Enterprises Landfill.

A citizen reported smoke in the area of 4800 block of Nansemond Parkway at 1:59 p.m. Soon after, an employee of the landfill called about a piece of equipment that had caught fire.

The fire spread to surrounding mulch piles at the site. About 1.5 acres were on fire, but no residences were threatened, and the roadway remained open. There were no injuries.
