Wright to hold fourth annual skills camp

Lakeland High School boys’ basketball coach Clint Wright will hold his fourth annual Discover Skills basketball camp in July.

The camp is designed to improve individual skills and discover skills participants didn’t know they had. Wright and his staff will conduct the camp in hopes of making young athletes better basketball players. The camp will be for boys and girls in third through 11th grades.

“This is a skills-based camp,” Wright said. “There’s not any pick-up basketball. It is going to be the student-athlete against the drill. Some kids get their skills sharpened, and some kids discover skills they didn’t know they had, which is why we call it the Discover Skills Camp.”

The high intensity training will help improve campers’ conditioning, as well. In the first hour and a half each day, athletes will do offensive drills, and then defensive skill building will follow a break.

Wright hopes the student-athletes can take some valuable life lessons from the camp, too. He wants them to understand that keeping their grades up is important. He also wants the athletes to understand that basketball can come with endless opportunities if they work hard enough.

“Basketball is a game of discipline and techniques,” Wright said. “It is a game where if you do it consistently enough that it’s possible it can help you further your education. So, we want to fine tune and help kids discover certain skills so that one day it could be possible to play at the next level.”

The feedback from the previous three years has been good. Wright has heard from players and parents who were encouraged by the results from the camp. Sometimes kids may need an extra push, and the Discover Skills camp may provide that for them.

“The enthusiasm and knowledge of the staff will enhance and excite the student athlete’s overall ability,” he said. “At the camp, one will become a better basketball player and have fun doing it.”

The camp will be held at Lakeland and costs $45, which also includes a T-shirt. The camp will be held from Jul. 26-28 from 6 to 9 p.m. daily. Appropriate basketball and workout attire is required.
