Nansemond-Suffolk Academy alumnus Trey Wren competed well in his third Virginia State Golf Association tournament.
Wren, who graduated from NSA in 2015 and is a rising junior at Temple University, was a part of the VSGA tournament Wednesday and Thursday. The tournament was held at The Club at Creighton Farms in Aldie and is Wren’s third appearance.
Wren was satisfied with his progress from his first appearance to his third. In his first appearance, he admits, he played poorly. Last year, he played well, finishing second in the stroke-play portion of the tournament. He then went on to lose in the semifinals of match play.
This year Wren didn’t have his best stuff but was still able to be effective. He made match play but didn’t play as well as he would have liked. Wren was matched up against Brandon Yoon. The Temple Owl shot a 74-73 (+3) and lost his match three and two.
“It was disappointing to be knocked out in the first round, but it was still a good overall tournament for me,” he said.
At Temple this year, Wren had a strong fall season, which included him shooting a competitive course record at the Members Club. Temple also won the Philadelphia City 6 tournament, which was one of Wren’s enjoyable moments this season. His spring season was not as strong, but he is looking forward to improving over the summer.
“I learned a lot about my game,” he said. “I feel more established and confident with every tournament I play.”
Wren believes that his game is at the level now where he is ready to win multiple college events. The former Saint has been still receiving a lot of support from friends and family back home in Suffolk.
