Nansemond River High School baseball standout Jarret Henderson has signed to play baseball at Norfolk State University.
Henderson said he accepted the offer the second the Spartans made it.
Henderson is happy he is able to stay close to home and play for an NCAA Division I program. They went 26-22 this season and recently had two players drafted into the major leagues. Henderson likes the opportunity he will have there to grow.
“They are a great baseball program,” he said. “They can develop players, so I think it is a good fit for me.”
His primary goal in his first year is just to come in and help any way that he can. People around him have given him solid advice during his whole recruiting process. One of the main things he was told that will stick with him is to work hard and good things will come.
With Henderson being close, his family will be able to attend most of his games. In his last season of baseball for Nansemond River, Henderson was the only all-conference selection from Nansemond River.
Now that the future Spartan has committed to NSU, he has accomplished both goals he wanted to achieve this season. He wanted to be an all-conference selection and commit to a college to play baseball.
“I’m very proud of myself,” he said. “I got to accomplish the goals I set out for myself, and I’m just excited for what’s to come.”
Though he doesn’t know for certain, he is leaning towards majoring in business. He is excited about the opportunity to immediately come in and compete.
“I love competing, no matter what I’m doing,” he said. “I love to compete, because that’s who I am. I can’t wait to experience what it’s like to play college baseball.”
