Change to school program unfair

To the editor:

Regarding the story “Schools to phase out early drop-off,” published in the July 18 edition, how will this affect those parents who cannot change their work schedules? How many slots will be available for parents to register at each school?

What the school system is doing is benefiting them more than the parents. Just because the school system is having budget cuts does not mean it should punish families because of the shortfall. Some families depend on the service and cannot afford to pay for the programs the schools are offering.

The article stated, “Harrison said tuition assistance and registration fee waivers may be available, depending on the program.”

But many families cannot afford the fees, and in my personal experience, I never qualified for the waiver. This solution will result in another problem — tardiness and absenteeism for some students. Some parents might even lose their jobs for nothing, as in a few years, the program will be changed again.
