Firefighters extinguish blaze

Nearly 50 firefighters responded to a house fire on Friday afternoon, working in 10-minute intervals to allow recovery time from the extreme heat.

Firefighters worked in 10-minute shifts to extinguish this fire on Friar Court Wednesday afternoon.

The fire was reported at 2:11 p.m. in the 200 block of Friar Court. The first units arrived at 2:17 p.m. and found heavy flames and smoke coming from the front of the residence, according to a city press release.

Each crew worked for 10 minutes and then rested on the fire department’s rehab bus for 30 minutes.

Two adults and one child were at home at the time of the fire, and they escaped safely. Three adults and one child were displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

No fire personnel were injured due to heat or other hazards.

The fire marshal’s office determined the cause of the fire to be discarded smoking material, according to the city press release.
