New Suffolk AAU team starting

The Suffolk Lady Cougars, established back in 2012, will officially place itself on the AAU circuit this season.

Originally, the Lady Cougars were involved strictly in a Parks and Recreation program. The head coach of the Lady Cougars, Beverly Gaston, decided to take a leap of faith.

The Suffolk Lady Cougars will be an all-girls club. Most organizations nearby have mostly boys’ and girls’ organizations. They are the only girls’ basketball multi-grade organization in Suffolk.

“Suffolk and some of the surrounding areas do not have an all-girls AAU club,” Gaston said. “Many of our girls are traveling many miles to find a home with a team to play organized basketball. It’s time to give the girls of Suffolk and the surrounding areas a team to call home.”

Players from fifth through ninth grades are welcomed to inquire about the organization. An introduction of the organization will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Suffolk Salvation Army, 400 Bank St.
