Andrew B. Damiani, 95, former mayor of Suffolk, passed away on Aug. 5, 2017, after a brief illness. He is predeceased by his parents, Marie and Antoine Damiani; his wife of 49 years, Mary Manos Damiani; and by three sisters and three brothers.
He is survived by one brother, Anthony Daman, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Andy was born and raised in Richmond. Andy has lived in Suffolk since the 1950s, where he became totally immersed in the life and politics of Suffolk, and in 1970 he was elected to serve on City Council. He served in that capacity until 1982, when he was elected mayor of Suffolk. Andy earned the nickname “Mr. Downtown” for his unceasing devotion to the promotion, development and revitalization of downtown Suffolk. Throughout his adult life, Andy held leadership positions in numerous civic and community organizations.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, Aug. 10, 2017, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary of the Presentation Catholic Church, 202 S. Broad St., Suffolk, followed by a funeral Mass. A reception will follow the Mass at the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts, 110 W. Finney Ave., Suffolk. Burial will be private. The family is being served by R.W. Baker & Co.
