Driver market this Saturday

A close-knit Suffolk community is raising money and awareness with a Saturday market this week.

Twisted Art and More will hold Driver Village Market Days from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. outside of their store and in the parking lot of the adjacent Knot Hole Station across from Arthur’s General Store. Vendors will purchase table spaces, and those proceeds will support the Driver Volunteer Fire Department.

About 12 vendors have signed up for the event as of Tuesday, Twisted Art and More owner Wanda McClenny said. Fifty-two artisans based in Hampton Roads rent space in her store with products made from repurposed materials and antique items.

“We’ve gotten a lot of response from it this time,” McClenny said. “All of them wanted to come.”

Arthur’s General Store will accept orders from customers outside for $6 bag lunches that can include various sandwiches and chips, or hot dogs and sausages.

“We come back, prepare them and deliver them back out,” Arthur’s General Store owner Greg Parker said.

He praised the relationship Driver businesses have with their volunteer firefighters.

“Most of them we’ve known for years,” Parker said about the firefighters. “We count on them for their manpower when we do things. It’s a good working relationship, and I want to keep that.”

Like Touch-a-Truck last April and Driver Days this October, the market is meant to draw more visitors and support the businesses in Driver Village that have worked together for many years.

“It’s important for our business community and our residents that have moved into this area in the last several years to celebrate small town living,” Parker said. “It brings some recognition to the tranquility of the area, and of course it gives us a chance to gain some new customers.”

It’s this cooperation that’s kept the town busy.

“We try to have different things going on that would drive people to Driver,” McClenny said. “We’re a busy little town.”
