Column braced at visitor center

Work took place earlier this week on one of the columns at the Suffolk Visitor Center.
One of the center’s front-porch columns, the one closest to East Constance Road, has shifted slightly as a result of foundation settlement and needed to be temporarily braced, city spokeswoman Diana Klink stated in an email.
The column closest to East Constance Road “has experienced a minor shift of approximately 1 ½ inches as a result of minor foundation settlement on the northwest corner of the porch which supports the column,” Klink stated. A structural engineer recommended bracing the column to prevent further movement until foundation repairs could be made.
The engineer is now in the process of developing those plans, Klink said.
