The Warriors golf team improved to 4-1 after winning both Southeastern District matches this week.

Steady improvement has been made each match the Nansemond River High School golf team has played. The Warriors faced Oscar Smith High School on Monday and defeated them 352-436. Superior play by Warriors No. 1 player Jackson Lyons helped them get a win. Lyons shot 77, which beat his previous career best of 78, which happened last week against Deep Creek High School.

Wednesday, the Warriors took on rival Lakeland High School. They defeated Lakeland 355-428. Jack Wolfe had the game of the day, shooting an 80, which was a career best for him as well. In both games this week, the Warriors shot around their average.

“Both of those performances were incredible,” Frye said. “For Jack, it was a drastic improvement for him. I saw him do a few things that really helped him. His attitude changed, and he improved his course management. Jackson continues to improve. Shooting 77 was big for him.”

Lyons and Wolfe will both continue to lead the way for Nansemond River.

The Warriors’ record is good through five games, but Frye admits that he and his team don’t pay it much mind. Next week, the Warriors have two games against two of the tougher teams in the SED. On Monday, the Warriors will face Western Branch High School, and on Wednesday they will take on Hickory High School.

“We have done well this week,” Warriors coach Brandon Frye said. “We did what we were supposed to do. I would like to see more improvement as the season goes on more.”

The match against Western Branch will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Elizabeth Manor Golf Course.
