Tatyana Thomas was named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Suffolk native and former Nansemond River High School volleyball standout Tatyana Thomas was recognized for her offensive performances with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte volleyball team. Her performance at the Bash at the Boro tournament made her case.
Thomas put together a career week in which she got All-Tournament honors. She helped guide the Niners to a four-set victory at UNCG by putting down 11 kills to hit .526, both new season highs, while setting a new school record for blocks in a four-set match and second-most in the NCAA this season with 11. Recently, Thomas tied the 17-year-old school record of nine blocks. She then went on to surpass that.
Thomas also set a new career high with 19 kills and hit .469 while adding six more blocks against Bethune-Cookman.
Last weekend, the senior hit .556 with five kills in a sweep of North Florida. For the four-match week, Thomas hit .512, averaging 3.12 kills a set and racking up 50 total kills on the week. She hit 39 at GSU to earn all-tournament honors. Thomas has been putting up impressive performances the first couple of weeks of UNCG’s season.
At Nansemond River, she led the Warriors to an undefeated season, winning the Ironclad Conference Championship. On top of that, she was named a unanimous Conference Player of the Year after her senior year. She was also recognized on all-district, all-region and all-state teams. Before transferring to UNCG, Thomas played two years at Hampton University.
