The Bulldogs got their first homecoming win in more than four years as they defeated Grassfield High School 47-14 Friday night.
King’s Fork High School football team improved to 3-1 on the season with the win.
The Bulldogs took the lead early after getting scores from Darran Butts and Bobby Boone for touchdowns. A 13-yard touchdown pass from Justin German to Cherrod Joe put KFHS up 21-0 heading into the second quarter. Midway through the second quarter, German added a rushing touchdown, which extended the Bulldogs’ lead to 27.
At the top of the third quarter, King’s Fork showed no signs of letting up after a 67-yard touchdown run by Butts put the Bulldogs up 33-0. However, Grassfield finally got on the board on the following possession. A couple long pass plays by Grassfield set them up in the Bulldogs’ territory, which ended with a three-yard run. After three quarters of play, the Bulldogs led 33-7.
During the mid-point of the fourth quarter, German scored on what was the longest play of the game on either side of the ball. A 90-yard rushing touchdown put the Bulldogs up 40-7. Grassfield saw King’s Fork’s explosive play and raised them one. On their following possession, they scored on a 45-yard touchdown run, which cut the lead to 40-14. Grassfield kicked off to King’s Fork, and big kick return positioned the Bulldogs into Grassfield territory. German finished that drive by scoring on a two-yard run.
German had one of his best performances of the season, finishing with more than 100 yards rushing and passing. He also accounted for four touchdowns. Butts had what is considered a normal performance for him, as he rushed for 120 yards and two touchdowns. King’s Fork got Joe going this game as well, as he finished with 83 yards receiving and a touchdown.
“I’m very proud of our kids. They played hard,” Bulldogs coach Scottie Littles said. “They did a good job. I’m proud of them and their diligence. We want to build on this by being consistent and growing as a team.”
Littles said after the game, he gave a game ball to King’s Fork Principal Dr. Ron Leigh, as this was the first homecoming win he has been a part of at the school. The team as a whole was proud to give the community something positive for homecoming.
“I’m happy for those seniors. They finally got a homecoming win under their belt,” Littles said. “It was a good win for us. It was good for the community, and I’m happy for our fans and administration.”
