The hauntings on Highland Avenue will start Saturday and continue on Halloween night.

Danny Lester and William VanHorn have once again constructed a haunted maze in the side yard at Lester’s house at 403 Highland Ave. The maze will be open beginning at dusk Saturday and Tuesday.

This is the fourth year the pair, who have been friends since high school, are doing the maze. Entry is free, but they take donations for the March of Dimes.

“I just like scary things, personally,” Lester said. “I enjoy seeing their faces when they come out laughing — they’re scared, but they’re laughing.”

This year’s theme will be dolls — creepy dolls, clowns and other sinister figurines designed to frighten folks, VanHorn said.

The two have amped up the scare factor every year, sourcing their hair-raising décor from yard sales, thrift stores, Craiglist and the Halloween store, VanHorn said.

“Every year we buy something new to add to it,” Lester said.

About a dozen friends and family have also volunteered to provide live scares inside the maze, Lester said.

Butler Paper Recycling also provided large cardboard boxes to be crafted into the walls.

This year, a small bouncy house for kids up to age 6 will be provided in the front yard.

“If they don’t want to go through, they can bounce,” Lester said.
