The Lady Saints took their home opener against Cape Henry Collegiate Thursday evening.

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy’ strong second-half effort helped propel the girls’ basketball team to the win.

At halftime, the Lady Saints held only a one-point lead. NSA was able to build some momentum and carry on to a 50-37 win.

Kaylah Brown led all scorers Thursday night with 17 points, while also adding four steals. Alivia Giles had a double-double for NSA, with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

If the first game is any indication of what’s to come, NSA will be able to adjust well from production lost from last season. Brown believes her team has talent and can surprise some teams this season.

“The team is fairly new this season, with only five of us returning,” Brown said. “We have to work really hard this year because of what we lost last year. The main thing we have been doing to be successful is communicating. Overall, I think we are a pretty good team, and we are going to work hard. We played hard out there, and everyone contributed.”

NSA outrebounded CHC 29-24. Sixteen of the 29 rebounds were offensive rebounds. Because NSA does not have the size they are used to having in previous seasons, guards will have to come in and help the forwards rebound.

NSA will take on Norfolk Academy at home at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
