A Suffolk Fire & Rescue battalion chief was indicted this week and arrested Thursday on charges involving an alleged hit and run accident.

Owen C. Thomasson III, 44, is charged with felony hit and run — personal injury, felony destroy property, two counts of misdemeanor destroy property, misdemeanor drive while intoxicated, misdemeanor fail to report accident, misdemeanor false police report and misdemeanor obstruct justice.

City spokesman Tim Kelley said the charges relate to an incident that happened on Oct. 14. A citizen called 911 at 11:02 p.m. to report that a pickup truck had struck a utility pole in the 800 block of Wilroy Road and left the scene.

Officers arrived on scene and found two utility poles, two mailboxes and a bush had been struck. The vehicle was located, unoccupied, at the intersection of East Constance Road and North Main Street.

Following their investigation, Suffolk police forwarded the case to the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office for review.

Kelley said Thomasson was neither on duty nor driving a city vehicle at the time of the incident.

Rebecca D. McConnell, 44, who was a passenger during the accident, is also charged with misdemeanor fail to report an accident and misdemeanor obstruct justice, Kelley said.

Kelley said Thursday that Thomasson is still employed with the city but declined to answer if any disciplinary action had been taken.

“Anything additional would be considered personnel in nature, and we cannot comment on it,” he said.
