Thomas receives postseason honors

Former Nansemond River High School volleyball standout Tatyana Thomas has finished a productive season the University of North Carolina—Charlotte and was selected for multiple postseason honors.

Thomas was named to the second team for Conference USA. Thomas had one of the conference and the NCAA’s most block total with 147. She also had the third-best hitting percentage in the conference. Earlier in the season, Thomas set a school record with 11 blocks in a game.

The former Lady Warrior was placed on three preseason all-tournament teams. She earned MVP honors in the Canisius Invitational. Back in September, she was also named the Conference USA Player of the Week.

Along with being named second-team C-USA, she was selected to the American Volleyball Coaches Association South all-region team and was also chosen to the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association all-state volleyball team. She was a unanimous decision for the NCCSIA team.

“It feels good to know that everything I’ve been working towards has finally paid off,” Thomas told UNC—Charlotte media. “I’m thankful for having such a good team and great coaching staff to even make this possible for me. It also feels good for my parents, who have pushed me through injuries, transferring schools and getting me to this point. I’m excited to see what the future brings and hope to continue playing.”

At Nansemond River, she helped lead the Lady Warriors to an undefeated season, winning the Ironclad Conference Championship. She was the Conference Player of the Year and named to both the all-region and all-state teams. After starting out at Hampton University, Thomas transferred to UNCC and has thrived in the program in her time there.
