The Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts is accepting registrations until Jan. 16 for its new children’s chorus.

The Suffolk Center chorus will have weekly rehearsals every Tuesday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. until May 15 at the Suffolk Center. Children from ages 7 to 17 are welcome.

“I think it was the passion to create an environment where students can have fun and learn some techniques, as well as be involved in a group setting to create a unity between the community and the Suffolk center,” said Gavin Harper, Suffolk Center education manager and chorus director.

The weekly sessions will provide the children with the chance to learn how to read music, identify pitches and hone other musical skills. Music choice will depend on the age ranges of the children participating in the chorus. The music will be appropriate for the age group and ability to read music, Harper said.

Plans are not set in stone for the performances the group will participate in, but Harper is sure there will be at least two performances during the four-month period.

Currently, the chorus group will only run until May 2018, but Harper hopes that it will become a year-long event.

“Since we are just starting, we need to see how this will work and see what the community is looking for,” Harper said.

Harper has big goals for the chorus, even in the beginning stages.

“I would really love to see them be able to perform large venues, travel to different places and become a solid group of students that enjoy being together and singing together,” Harper said. “Hopes are high.”

Registration will cost $10, and each student will also have to pay a $65 participation fee. All of the money received for registration will be used to fund the chorus.

The Suffolk Center will accept registrations until the first meeting on Jan. 16. There is no limit to the number of children that can participate.
