Ronald E. Chappell

Ronald Earl Chappell, 76, of 3215 Meeting Place, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 28, 2017, in his home, where he was surrounded by his family.

Mr. Chappell was born in Perquimans County on Oct. 30, 1941, and was the son of the late Howard and Bernice Winslow Chappell. A retired Chief Petty Officer, he served for 21 years in the U.S. Navy and later worked with Southern Oil Company. He was a member of Pactolas Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Mae Stump Chappell; three sons, Bobby, Steven and Paul Chappell; and a stepdaughter, Gina Mayer.

Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Davis Chappell; two sons, David Chappell and wife, Michelle, of Chicago, Ill., and Jason Chappell and wife, Shannon, of Greenville, N.C.; three sisters, Elizabeth Brinkley, of Sunbury, Kaye H. Winslow, of Belvidere, and Mary Lucille Jones, of Roper; a brother, William H. “Billy” Chappell, of Roper; and three grandchildren, Tess, Tori and Tedy Jane Chappell. Also surviving are Carolyn’s children and their families, Amy Jo Skiles, of Plymouth, Benjamin Skiles and wife, Molly, of Roxbury, Conn., a son-in-law, Mercer Mayer, also of Roxbury; grandchildren, Ben, Zeb, Arden, Justine, Caleb and Tilly; and great-granddaughter, Autumn.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Up River Cemetery, 195 Turnpike Road, Belvidere, NC 27919, and will be conducted by his pastor, the Rev. Dr. Jerry Teboe. Military honors will be accorded.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to any chapter of the American Cancer Society.
