The first baby of 2018 in Suffolk was born in Sentara Obici Hospital.
Aden Baker was born at 12:52 a.m. to Victoria Baker on New Year’s Day. Aden was born weighing 5 pounds, 12 ounces and measuring 19 inches.
“I didn’t know he was coming so early,” said Baker. “I came to the hospital for cramps and found out I was already dilated 4 centimeters.”
Aden’s original due date was Jan. 4, but everyone in the family was very excited to have a New Year’s Day baby, according to Baker.
Normally, the delivery rooms get busy on New Year’s Eve, and the Women’s Services floor can be an exciting place.
“The atmosphere is pretty exciting. We get pretty busy before the new year,” said Ashley Kreidler, registered nurse on the Women’s Services floor.
But no moms-to-be were fighting to be first this new year, because Baker was the only one in labor as the clock struck midnight.
“It gets competitive between the nurses to see who is going to get to take care of the first baby,” Kreidler said.
There were about 11,283 babies born in the United States on New Year’s Day, and 383,000 babies born all over the world, according to unicef.org.
