Grassfield High School swept the season series with Nansemond River High School Friday night.
The Warriors were on the road to try to get the victory against Grassfield but felt short, 76-69. The game was close between the two teams in the first quarter. Grassfield was able to hold a 14-12 lead after one quarter of play. Nansemond River outscored Grassfield in the second quarter 20-18, and the two teams went into halftime even at 32.
The third quarter seemed to be the downfall of the Warriors, as they allowed 26 points that quarter. Warriors coach Ed Young said that the Warriors’ defensive lapses were too big to overcome. Nansemond River tried to cut down on the Grassfield lead but couldn’t as Grassfield continued to build on their lead. They shot 10-of-11 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter as the Warriors resorted to fouling.
Jeremiah Lewis led the way once again for the Warriors with 19 points, 17 rebounds and five blocked shots. Justin Fatherly added 11 points.
Nansemond River will now take on rival King’s Fork High School at 7 p.m. Wednesday at King’s Fork.
