William Stanfield Johnson Sr.

William Stanfield Johnson, Sr., 93, passed away Jan. 31, 2018. He was born in Milwaukee, N.C., the son of the late Fred Lewis Johnson and Hattie Irvin Stanfield Johnson. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II. William began his career as a school teacher for the Windsor School District and then worked for World Book Encyclopedia as a branch manager. He later went on to own and operate Nags Head Wholesale Company and a gift shop in Nags Head, N.C. William was a longtime member of the Kill Devil Hills Rotary International, where he served for numerous years with perfect attendance and received the Outstanding Achievement Award.
He was predeceased by his companion, Betty Alphin.
William is survived by his daughter, Cynthia A. Johnson; son and daughter-in-law, William S. Johnson Jr. (Debbie); grandchildren, Jamie Leigh Johnson, Robert Johnson (Allison), Chris Moyer (Naomi), Colin Moyer (Alicia), Katie Moyer and Craig Moyer; great-grandchildren, Isabel Johnson, Lydia Moyer and Peter Moyer; and former wife, Martha Parker Umphlette.
A funeral service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018, at Parr Funeral Home & Crematory with the Rev. Gary Newsome officiating. There will be a time of visitation one hour prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be held at a later date at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.
