George H. Stroud Jr.

George H. “Jack” Stroud Jr. passed away on Feb. 16, 2018. He is predeceased by his parents, George and Irene Stroud Sr., and his wife, Lillian Stroud.

George was a very active member of both West End Baptist Church and Nansemond River Power Squadron. He retired as deputy executive director of the Virginia Port Authority. “Capt. Jack” graduated from North Carolina State in industrial engineering. While attending, he raced Class D hydroplanes as an amateur and then later as a professional. His love for the water, motors and boats continued all his life as his family lived near the Nansemond River, enjoying family boating for many years.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Elizabeth James Barkley (Bob), of Richmond, and Mary Stroud Davies (Tommy), of Suffolk; son, George Walter Stroud (Betty Jo), of Zuni; four grandchildren, Ellee Winston, James Davies, Christian Davies and Zachary Stroud.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, at West End Baptist Church, 105 St. James Ave., with the Rev. Dr. Robert Pipkin officiating. A visitation will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19, 2018, at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St. Burial will be held at Wakefield Cemetery, 205 W. Church St., Wakefield. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to West End Baptist Church Endowment Fund. Condolences may be offered at RWBakerFH.com.
