The Nansemond River High School swim team earned three medals at the Class 5 state swim meet last weekend.
The boys’ swim team placed 16th overall, while the girls’ team placed 30th. Allen Zachary earned two medals as he placed eighth in the 200 freestyle and fifth in the 50 freestyle. Also, the 400-freestyle relay team placed seventh, which also earned them a medal. The top eight earn medals at the state swim meet.
Even though the boys’ 200-freestyle relay team earned 11th, they hit a school record for time. For the girls’ team, Selby Heyman and Kristina Zachary placed in the top 15 of the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke, respectively.
Before heading to states, the boys’ swim team finished fourth in the region and the girls’ team finished sixth, which were the two best finishes in school history. The boys’ team also finished with an all-time regular season win record and finished the regular season second in the Southeastern District, only losing one meet. The 12 athletes they sent to the state meet this year is also a school high.
