A Suffolk man was arrested Tuesday after police say he took a vehicle with a 1-year-old child in the backseat.

Kurtis Lamar Barnes, 31, was arrested on charges of kidnapping, child endangerment and unauthorized use of auto, according to a city press release.

Police responded to the 2700 block of Godwin Boulevard on Tuesday shortly before 11 a.m. It was reported that a known individual had taken a woman’s vehicle with her 1-year-old child in the backseat, the press release stated.

Preliminary investigation found the victim had left her son with the man but did not give him permission to leave the premises or drive her vehicle, the release stated.

The vehicle was found nearby a short time later with the child left in the car seat and the doors unsecured. The child was not injured. The suspect was also located, the press release stated.
