Foy Carter Gwaltney

Foy Carter Gwaltney, 88, passed away on March 2, 2018. She was the daughter of the late Nancy Charlotte and Herbert Oates Carter. Foy was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Robert A. Gwaltney, as well as her daughter, Sharon G. Christiansen; brothers, Martin Carter, Holmes Carter and sisters, Alice King and Acene Byrum.

Foy was a member of Holy Neck Christian Church, The Women’s Bible Class, Women’s Fellowship and sang in the choir for 45 years. She was blessed with a beautiful voice and touched the lives of many as she sang in choirs and musicals and at weddings and funerals. She was a godly woman with a deep and abiding love of the Lord. Her greatest loves were her family, friends, gardening, art and music. She enjoyed sharing with others, whether it was singing at a community event or sending you home with vegetables, canned goods or a piece of art that she had painted. Foy was a retired secretary and bookkeeper, having spent many years working alongside her father and brothers at Carter Vault Company.

She leaves behind her three children, Robert Gwaltney and wife, Debbie, of Reedville, Richard Gwaltney and wife, Debbie, and Tim Gwaltney and wife, Faith, all of Suffolk; her son-in-law, Ron Christiansen, of Pittsburgh; grandchildren, Kara C. Rein and husband, Brandon, of Coral Springs, Fla., Jason Gwaltney and wife, Abby, of Springfield, Wesley Gwaltney and wife, Jessica, of Blacksburg, Matthew Gwaltney and wife, Stephanie, of Suffolk, Esther G. Perry and husband, Codie, and Elizabeth Gwaltney, of Portsmouth; great-grandchildren, Keira, Carter, Alaina, Jackson, Kenia and Jacob.

Also surviving is her twin, Joy Johnson, whom she loved dearly; sisters, Peggy Holly, of Suffolk, and Betty Warren, of Turberville, S.C.; brothers, Delmar Carter, Don Carter and wife, Judy, all of Suffolk, and her sister-in-law, Dot Gwaltney, of Windsor; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday March 6, 2018, at Holy Neck Christian Church, 4400 Holy Neck Road, Suffolk, VA 23437, officiated by the Rev. Dave Meadors. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. A visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 5, 2018, at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St., Suffolk, VA 23434, and at other times at Foy’s home.
