Suffolk had a good year for individual accolades for the basketball season.
With the final All-Region team coming out last week, Suffolk has totaled nine All-Region players in boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball. King’s Fork High School led the way with six total selections. The girls’ team had four, with the boys having two selections.
Nylah Young, Camary Harris, Brianna Copeland and Neecole Brown each made the All-Region teams. The season came to an end for the Lady Bulldogs last week, but they finished the season as co-champions of the Southeastern District.
They had the district Player of the Year in Young and had the district and region Coach of the Year with Maurice Fofana.
The boys’ team added two selections. James Hatton and Keontae Boyette were both selected to the All-Region team. Boyette and Hatton were also All-Southeastern District selections.
For Lakeland High School, Kayla Barnes and Clint Wright Jr. represented. Barnes was selected to the second team Class 3 Region A team, while Wright Jr. was selected first team for the boys’ team. Wright Jr. is only a sophomore and will have his eyes set on even bigger things next season. Barnes enjoyed a senior season in which she earned 1,000 career points. Wright Jr. and Hatton were the only Suffolk boys’ basketball players to make the first team in their respective regions.
Briana Autrey was the only All-Region selection for Nansemond River High School. She was selected to the first team Class 5 Region A team. Autrey was also a first team All-Southeastern District selection, as she was one of the more talented players in South Hampton Roads and the district. She will be on her way to the Air Force Academy to play NCAA Division I basketball.
With nine selections, it is likely Suffolk can get one or two athletes placed on the All-State teams. The Lady Bulldogs finished as one of the top four teams in Class 4, so they may be the most likely candidates.
