The Veterans Appreciation Committee will dedicate a new monument and bench this Saturday at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk.
The committee includes members of the Suffolk Ruritan Club and Suffolk Elks Lodge 685, along with private citizens. Members will dedicate a new granite monument that says, “As long as there are veterans, we will never forget them. Thank you for your service.”
“The monument recognizes the five branches of the military and gives thanks to the veterans for their service to this country,” E.C. Harris, a Suffolk Ruritan Club member, said in a phone interview.
The 15-minute ceremony will also dedicate a new granite bench by the columbarium that reads “We, the people, are eternally grateful.”
“It’s for families to have another place to sit when they visit their relatives who passed away,” Harris said.
Members of the public are encouraged to join the committee members and veterans for the ceremony and pay their respects to those that served.
“I would encourage people who haven’t been to Albert G. Horton to experience it,” Harris said. “Spend a few minutes there to experience the solitude and peacefulness of the cemetery, and to reflect back on the sacrifices people have made to allow us to live the way we live today.”
The ceremony will be at 10 a.m. Call 620-8625 for more information.
