Nansemond River High School senior Vidal “V.J.” Wilkins has committed to play college basketball.
About two months removed from his final high school season, Wilkins has committed to play college basketball at Regent University in Virginia Beach. The combo guard went through his recruiting process and felt like Regent was the best fit for him.
“The recruiting process was great,” he said. “I decided Regent was the best fit because it was a family atmosphere and I loved the campus, and they made me felt like family when I visited. I felt it was best for me to grow on and off the court there.”
Wilkins will be close to home, which played big in his decision. The location is perfect for him, because he won’t be too far away from family and friends. His friends and family were very supportive of him during the process and were giving him wise words along the way.
The Regent staff has plans for Wilkins to come in and add some offensive firepower with his shooting ability. He can get going at any time, which was most evident in his 26-point effort against Indian River High School this past season.
“I’m looking to come in and contribute right away and work as hard as I can on and off the court,” he said. “I want to play to the best of my abilities and show that I can play hard.”
Even though the season didn’t go quite the way Wilkins wanted it to, he felt he improved in a lot of areas. Wilkins knows the speed at the college level is different and that he will have to adjust quickly if he wants to come in and make an immediate impact. From now until fall, the senior plans on working with different trainers to improve his game.
“I want to work on my weak areas while getting in the weight room and eating healthy and just condition my body,” he said.
The senior Warrior plans to major in communications.
