Lady Warriors finish week strong

The Nansemond River High School softball team finished its week 3-0.
The Lady Warriors played three games last week, including two wins over rivals. Nansemond River started off its week last Tuesday against Lakeland High School. After that victory, they moved on to defeat Western Branch High School and then finally toppled King’s Fork High School last Thursday 5-1.
After starting off a little slowly this season, the Lady Warriors feel like they picked up some momentum and have been playing playoff ball.
“I was very happy with the way we played all week,” Coach Gabe Rogers said. “We realized going into the week we were 2-3 in a tough district, and we knew we just had to start collecting wins. I told the girls if we want to make the playoffs, we have to start playing playoff ball now. Every team in the district can put a competitive team on the field, and if we don’t play well, we can lose.”
In the midst of their three-game win streak, Rogers surpassed 100 career wins at Nansemond River. Though getting 100 wins is special, Rogers gave credit to the teams he has coached and to his assistant coaches.
“It was nice, but I can’t take credit for 100 wins,” Rogers said. “I am very fortunate to have a ton of talented girls to come through Nansemond River — but not only good teams but a strong coaching staff. Coach Glover and Coach Vann and I have been together through this whole time. My name gets attached to the wins, but I couldn’t have done it without them. We have been successful, and it is a great accomplishment.”
Nansemond River will face Hickory High School at home at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
