Tornado watch in effect for Suffolk

UPDATED 2:40 a.m.: The tornado watch has been canceled early for Suffolk. However, a severe thunderstorm warning is under effect for North Suffolk and other parts of Hampton Roads.

Earlier: The National Weather Service has placed a tornado watch in effect for Suffolk and the surrounding area until 3 a.m. Monday.

Showers and thunderstorms will accompany a cold front as it crosses the area, according to the weather service. There is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms. Damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall are the primary threats, but an isolated tornado is also possible.

After Monday, beautiful weather is expected the rest of the week, with highs in the 60s and 70s and sunny skies.
