Judge dismisses charges from fatal crash

A judge dismissed three charges for a Chesapeake man earlier this month that resulting from a fatal crash last year.

Calvin Coolidge James Jr., 61, was charged in the death of John Groves, who was 84 years old when he died four days after the fatal crash in the 3300 block of Holland Road.

Groves was making a right turn in his pickup truck when the vehicle was struck from the rear by a semi-truck. The impact sent his truck into a nearby residence.

In an interview with police after the crash, James said he was driving on Holland Road when he saw a vehicle moving slowly, according to the transcript of the interview filed in Suffolk Circuit Court. He looked to the left to see if he could pass the truck, but there were vehicles coming. When he turned back around, all he saw was brake lights, James told the officer.

He also said in the interview that he was talking on the cellphone at the time of the crash, according to the transcript.

James was charged with involuntary manslaughter, reckless driving and following too closely.
